It was worth getting up at 4am for this view… and there was always the Espresso Doppio for breakfast to look forward to!

Summer Solstice

Some twenty thousand people gathered at Stonehenge in Wiltshire, UK, to witness the sunrise on the longest day of 2010.

It was a wonderful atmosphere. From sunset to sunrise, there were Druids, Morris Dancers, hippies, party animals, tourists, travellers and quite a lot of security and police!

It’s the one time in the year that visitors can move amongst the stones of this 5000 year old monument, so everyone was eager to celebrate the opportunity in their own way.

For me it was a cappuccino, after watching the sun come up between the stones!

Southend Seaside

A quick visit to the seaside… this could have been shot at dusk any time in the year. But I had to go down to the beach when it was below freezing.

It still makes me think of summer though!

Snowy Snowdonia

This was part of a quick shoot to take advantage of the rare combination of snow and sun!

Apart from cold toes and getting the car stuck, it was a successful trip.

This is a quick flashback to my last shoot. While concentrating on Maine lighthouses, it would have been rude not to visit the East Quoddy (or Head Harbour) Lighthouse, across the border in Canada.

At low tide, you can reach the lighthouse, though watch out for the treacherously slippery seaweed!

Lighthouses IV

This is the incomparable Pemaquid Point Lighthouse. I could, and perhaps should, have spent the entire shoot here!

Amazing location, rock structure and sunrises combine to make this a fantastic subject.

I may have to upload Lighthouses IVa, IVb and IVc, so you can see more of this fantastic place!

Lighthouses III

Doubling Point Light was the third that I managed to catch in between the torrential rain showers. Often, after an unpromising day, a beautiful sunset rewards the patient.

This lighthouse really is as delightful as it looks. Living in the lighthouse keepers’ house must have made for wonderful sunset viewing… as long as you’re prepared for the bighting insects! Bring some bug-spray if you want to view this one!

Lighthouses II

Second port of call, so to speak… Portland Head Light.

This was the one break in the cloud that day, just after sunrise. Chilly, but definitely worth the pre-dawn start.

California Dreaming 3 – Desert

The most magical time in the Mojave Desert and Joshua Tree National Park was of course around sunrise and sunset.

Though take care… when you’re staggering around in the dark, the vegetation really is as spiky as it looks!

Grand Canyon!

This is the Hole-in-the-Ground to end all Holes-in-the-Ground!

When you first see it, the scale really takes your breath away. But it’s not long before you find yourself running around, trying to get that interesting tree in shot, along with the amazing view and the pink sky… then your breath gets taken away again when you realise how stupidly near the edge you are!
